World No. 2 Jannik Sinner arrived in Montreal on Tuesday (July 30) and was seen engaged in intense training ahead of the 2024 Canadian Open. Following an early exit from the Wimbledon Championships, the Italian has missed two tournaments, including the ongoing Paris Olympics

It was recently revealed that Sinner contracted the virus a day before his quarter-final match against Daniil Medvedev at SW19. The fatigue weakened him and hampered his performance against the Russian on the Centre Court. He then skipped the Swedish Open and had to withdraw from the Olympics on doctor's advice.

"I am saddened to inform you that unfortunately, I will not be able to participate in the Paris Olympic Games. After a good week of clay training, I started to feel unwell. I spent a couple of days resting and during a visit, the doctor found tonsillitis and strongly advised me against playing," Sinner said in an Instagram post. (translated)

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, a video surfaced on the internet where Sinner can be seen practising in Montreal. The 22-year-old is currently the defending champion and he is expected to retain the title.

Novak Djokovic withdraws from Canadian Open

Meanwhile, ATP legend Novak Djokovic has confirmed he will miss the Masters 1000. The Serbian announced his decision after his second-round victory over Rafael Nadal at the Paris Olympics. On Wednesday, he defeated Koepfer in straight sets to make it to the quarter-finals

“While we’re disappointed that Novak will be unable to take part in this year’s tournament, we understand his decision and wish him the best at the Olympics and the remainder of his season,” National Bank Open tournament director Valérie Tétreault said.

Young sensation Carlos Alcaraz's participation is also uncertain. The Spaniard, who is playing singles and doubles in Paris, is reported to have a minor thigh problem. If both stay out of the event, Sinner will likely win the tournament.
