Francisco Comesana conquered yet another intense three-set match, delivering a career-defining victory over World No. 2 Russian Alexander Zverev to secure his place in the semi-finals of the Rio Open presented by Claro on Friday night.
The Argentine, who had already showcased his tenacity by saving a match point against Nicolas Jarry in the second round, rallied from a 1-4 deficit in the final set to dominate the top seed with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the ATP 500 event, marking his first appearance in a tour-level semi-final.

The pivotal moment in the match occurred at 4-all. Zverev had a clear opportunity with a straightforward put-away bounce smash at the net. However, Comesana astonishingly reflexed it back and managed to chase down a short volley from Zverev, ultimately executing a sliding backhand winner.

Following this exchange, Zverev double-faulted on the next point, resulting in the loss of his serve. Comesana then showed his confidence by serving out the match without conceding a point, delivering four strong first serves in succession.
The 24-year-old, previously winless at the tour level this season, showed incredible skill by winning the final five games of the match, securing victory in just two hours and 31 minutes. With a huge leap of 19 places to No. 67 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, Comesana is set to face Alexandre Muller in the semi-finals of the Rio Open.
"I was repeating to myself throughout the match, ‘How good it is to be alive.’ So, I was enjoying the entire match,” the Argentine said.
“I think it is because [of] all the hard work I have been doing to be here. I have to be grateful for this moment and I am enjoying it," he added.
