The Untold Story of Nalbandian

The year was 2007 and it was the Madrid Open, one of the most popular ATP 1000 tournaments in the Clay Season. The favourites, once again, were the big three, who were also the top-ranked players in the ATP scene.

However, one unseeded Argentinian had other ideas. David Nalbandian had already had a tournament to remember beating the likes of high-seeded players like Tomas Berdych, but was not done there. Everyone might have thought that Nalbandian was done in the quarter-finals against the King Of Clay himself but surprised everyone by beating him in straight sets.

This was already a big win for Nalbandian but he surprised everyone by beating an in-form Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals and beating the legendary Swiss Maestro Roger Federer in the finals after being one set down.

This was enough to make the Argentinian the only player to beat the Big Three in a single tournament and create history. Nalbandian did enjoy some successful years after this achievement but could not go on to reach the top, but he should still be appreciated for beating the three greatest tennis players in the World in their prime.
