The qualifications for the main draw of the Roland Garros is still going on and one of the players who we were expecting to make the main draw and get through the qualifying rounds is Dominic Thiem. The Austrian was playing his last French Open before retiring from the game. Everyone wanted him to have the perfect ending to his last Clay season.

Dominic Thiem was set to play another unseeded player Otto Virtanen, who was a young player from Finland up against a much more experienced Thiem. Though the 30-year-old was not at his peak we still expected him to beat the young player and make sure he made he was one step closer to the main draw and still keep his Roland Garros dream alive in what is the last season of his entire career.

Thiem fails to make it to the main draw

Everyone wanted the former 2020 US Open champion and the two-time Roland Garros finalist to make it to the main draw. Unfortunately, his French Open finally ended as he lost to Virtanen in two straight sets. Thiem was already under pressure after losing the first set by a margin of 6-2 and really had to make a big comeback in the second set. The second set saw Thiem try his best but eventually, his service was broken by the young Finnish player which ended his Clay season aspirations.

This was a really heartbreaking loss for Thiem who has not had the luckiest of times in his career. The man who was known to have the best backhands in the business might have to say goodbye to his career without a victory in this Clay season. He will still go down as a former Grand Slam champion and one of the few players to beat some of the top-ranked players in the business, especially the Holy Trinity. We should also admire his efforts to make a comeback despite facing some horrible injuries and setbacks which is always tough for any player.
