American tennis player Reilly Opelka has called for an umpire suspension after his controversial call during the Dallas Open 2025 match. Opelka exchanged a heated argument with chair umpire Greg Allensworth and received a code of violation. He was playing his match against Cameron Norrie in the round of 16. The American was continuously interrupted by a fan coughing during his serve. When he was 30-30, he stopped his game and asked the fan to leave the arena.

The umpire, Allensworth, gave a code of violation for arguing with the spectators and gave him a penalty. After that, the American charged straight to the chair umpire and argued. In tennis, for the first offence, players receive a warning. But if they continued their violation, they would be given a point penalty. Opelka received his penalty according to the rule book. The American called Allensworth the worst referee of the ATP and called for a suspension. Reilly says he got no help from the umpire regarding the annoying fan, so he took matters into his own hands and asked him to leave the arena.

But despite all the penalties, he won the match against Cameron. In his post-match briefing, he said, “He’s real bad. He almost changed the outcome of that match just because he doesn't really know what he’s doing. He got emotions when we were arguing. He got very tense and frantic; he couldn't give me an answer. He didn't tell that guy to shut up; he was doing it for three points. He didn't do his job, so I had to tell him, ‘Get out of here.' The guy was pretty quite rude. You’ve got to understand the situation. You can't always play by the rulebook. It’s just a common sense.”

Opelka feels the umpire would have cost him reaching the quarterfinals of the Dallas Open and wanted him to be out for at least a few tournaments as a punishment. Reilly Opelka will face Tommy Paul in the next round and will also pay $5,000 as a fine. The American player claims the umpire could have changed his pay cheques if the match didn't go his way and feels players always get fined, but the umpires get away with their mistakes.
