The Monte Carlo Masters has finally come to an end and it has been a riveting tournament that has seen all the drama and twists every tennis fan wanted to see. One of the most iconic Clay season tournaments on clay has lived up to its expectations even after some surprising withdrawals which we have witnessed going into the tournament.

Though the tournament has already come to an end, it will still be great to look into the history of the tournament that has impressed us for a long time. The winner of this year's season was the Greek talent Stefanos Tsitsipas who won the title against Casper Ruud beating him two straight sets. This was the tournament that put him back into the top 10 ATP rankings. This has been a great start to the clay season by the 25-year-old for the two-time grand slam finalist. Just like him, there have been many players who have won this major title multiple times and today we will be talking about these individuals.

So, here are the players who have won 3 or more Monte Carlo titles during their career:

5. Stefanos Tsitsipas- 3

This was Tsitsipas third title in Monte Carlo and he has been having a great time in this ATP tournament throughout his career. Before this he had also won back-to-back tournaments in 2021 and 2022, making him one of the best clay players we have ever seen. This tournament is something that Tsitsipas holds close to his heart and has made sure to dominate the tournament every time he features at this venue.

4. Illie Nastase- 3

nastase

During the 70’s and the 80’s, Illie Nastase was one of the most entertaining players in tennis. Nastase was one of the gifted players from Romania to ever play the game. He might have been known for some of his weird antics as well, but this does not take away his sheer talent where he was able to lob and retrieve the ball and cover the whole court. We can say that he made the game look easy. This was evident in the Monte Carlo Masters as well where he won three titles in a row in 1971, 1972 and 1973, where he also surprised everyone by beating the legendary Bjorn Borg. Nastase was also the first player in the open era to have three back-to-back titles in the open era.

3. Thomas Muster- 3

Austrian talent Thomas Muster was one of the most powerful aggressive players in the 90’s, who was capable of beating some of the best players in the world. His game on the grass could be criticised, but his game on clay was almost invincible. Muster first got his Monte Carlo glory moment in 1992. He then came back to take his crown after 3 years beating the mighty Boris Becker in one of the greatest Monte Carlo finals ever and defended the title in the following year as well.

2. Bjorn Borg- 3

borg

If there is one player who made it a habit of dominating every court in the game it is the Swedish legend Bjorn Borg. Borg was one of the legendary players in the 70's and the late 80’s. It was the brilliant and flawless technique of Borg that made sure he could switch from defence to attack when it was required. The Monte Carlo Masters was another tournament where he showed that undeniable dominance winning it the first time in 1977 and came back to win back-to-back titles in 1979 and 1980.

1. Rafael Nadal- 11

The king of clay was the real master of the tournaments and no one has come close to Rafael Nadal in Monte Carlo. Nadal has not won the most titles at this venue but had the longest winning streak as well. Right from the first time the Spaniard won the Masters in 2005, he went on to have an 8-year winning streak assuring his dominance in the clay tournament. Even after the streak was broken by Novak Djokovic in 2013, El Nino came back in 2016 to get his crown back and defend it once again for two more years. This is not the tournament that made Nadal, but it was Nadal that made this tournament iconic.
