In a vote contest on Instagram, his fan following made all the decisions regarding his success. Fans cast their votes for the celebrities on GQ's Instagram stories, and the victor of each "match" advanced to the next round.

On GQ's Instagram story, fans from all over the world participated in a daily bracket contest to determine which two celebrities would advance each day. Federer would become the final man standing after defeating Timothee Chalamet, Jonah Hill, Harry Styles, and A$AP Rocky. Kanye West, Ryan Gosling, Justin Bieber, Tyler the Creator, John Mayer, Russell Westbrook, Pharrell Williams, Young Thug, David Beckham, LeBron James, and Shia LaBeouf were among the other contenders.

Roger Federer, however, displayed his modest and humorous side after receiving the prize when he asserted that his "extraordinary" fashion taste was not the reason he received it, but rather his enormous global following of devoted admirers. Given that his supporters voted for him and helped him win the GQ award, Roger Federer acknowledged that they should be rewarded. Nonetheless, the tennis player reiterated that he will always be the first to accept the decade award. He said he inherited this quality from his dad. When asked to compare himself to 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras, Federer said he is more gregarious than the American because he is more inclined to socialize and go to events.
