The Monte Carlo Masters has been one of the most popular ATP titles to date in the clay season. There have been many great players who have gone on to win this entire clay season. This season itself features some of the best players in the world as well. We have already seen some interesting turn of events in the tournament featuring some talented players in the mix.

One of the most talented players in the setup is none other than Matteo Berrettini. The 27-year-old Italian was one of the top-ranked players in 2022 known for his aggressive style of game. Despite being the 2021 Wimbledon finalist and semi-finalist in the 2019 US Open and 2022 Australian Open, he also has 8 ATP single titles to his name and started this season's clay season really well by winning the Marrakech Open this year. Just when you think Berettini was back to business he was in for a surprise in the Monte Carlo Masters.

Kecmanovic ruins Berrettini’s Monte Carlo dream

This would have been a great opportunity for Berrettini to win back-to-back titles in the clay season and move up the card, but his chances were ruined by young Serbian player Miomir Kecmnovic. What would hurt Berrettini is not because he lost to an inexperienced opponent, but losing in the worst possible fashion you could imagine. Kecmanovic dominated Berrettini by playing some smart tennis switching from defence to offence to put the Italian under pressure. Berrettini lost both the sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-1 missing out on another clay title.

This is unfortunately the end of the road and one of the biggest upsets of the season after Wawrinka was eliminated. Berrettini was easily a knockout favourite going into the tournament, but unfortunately, he will have to go back home and look forward to the next tournament. This will remain one of the iconic upsets in tennis in the 2024 season that we never saw coming at all. We hope Berrettini comes back from this loss and gets back to winning ways again.
