Jannik Sinner progresses to third round in Wimbledon 2024 after overcoming Matteo Berrettini in 4-set thriller

The match between Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini proved to be a thriller. The second-round match between the two Italians at the center court had three tiebreakers and the fans were entertained. Barring the third set, all the other sets were equally contested. In the end, Sinner emerged victorious after managing to win all the tiebreakers in the match.

Jannik Sinner beat Matteo 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 7-6 (7-4). Berrettini seemed impressive in the match. But given the purple patch of his fellow countrymate, it seemed to be a day where his best efforts went in vain. Berrettini failed to claim the set point and the match went to the tiebreaker where Sinner won it 7-3 to claim the first set. The story was similar even in the second set.

Matteo Berrettini had the lead in the first few games. But Jannik made his return to the game and dominated the game. But Matteo returned to the set and forced a tiebreaker. In the second consecutive tiebreaker of the match, Sinner won similarly. The World number one claimed the set 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker 7-4. It was a must-win third set for Berrettini to stay alive in the match.

Matteo Berrettini's comeback not enough against Jannik Sinner

The former semifinalist was up for the challenge and came out all guns blazing against the Australian Open winner. It was a set where Matteo seemed to be at his best and looked to return to his old form. He was all over his Italy mate and clinched the set 6-2. It kept Matteo alive in the match and the fans sensed a potential 5-setter in the centre court.

However, the fourth set saw Berrettini lose the match despite putting on a show. The ace racquetman tried to be at his best. But the pace and agility of Sinner proved to be the deciding factor. The star player held on to his own as the match set went to the tiebreaker. Jannik showed why he is the number one ranked player in the world, as he won the set 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker 7-4.
