Tennis sensation and world number two Iga Swiatek defeated Emma Navarro by 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinal of the 2025 Australian Open at Rod Laver Arena of Melbourne Park on January 22, Wednesday. The Polish star has successfully made it to the semi-finals, where she will be facing Madison Keys, who has toppled Elina Svitolina in another blockbuster quarter-final clash. The 23-year-old tennis star has a great start to the game, having won the first set comfortably. She continued her beast form and marked straight sets to win before stepping into the semi-finals.

However, a clear double bounce in the quarterfinal clash between Swiatek and Navarro has reignited the debate over how tennis is using video technology. Navarro suffered a loss at a point when she was trailing 6-1 despite the ball bouncing twice in front of stretching Swiatek, who went on to win both sets. The Australian Open has introduced a video review system this time, but it can be used in a point-ending call or when the players stop.

Iga did not get to the ball on 1 bounce… although it was very close
It should’ve been Emma’s point. But according to the rules, Emma had to stop play when she saw the double bounce

I thought this is like the umpire's kind of job to call it, you know: Iga Swiatek
Swiatek has been facing a strong backlash from the fans and tennis analysts after her opponent lost the point despite this clear double bounce. In the same vein, Swiatek breaks the silence and gives a straightforward answer to the critics.

Swiatek says she was not sure if the ball double bounced in her match against Navarro at Australian Open, ‘I don't remember even seeing the contact point.. I wasn't sure.. I thought this is the umpire's job to call it.. I was also waiting for the VAR, but I didn't see it’

“Honestly, I didn't see the replay after this point because after the point I didn't look up for the screens because I wanted to stay focused. I wasn't sure if it was a double bounce or if I hit it with my frame. I don't know. Sometimes you don't really look when you hit the ball. So I wasn't sure. I thought this was like the umpire's kind of job to call it, you know. I was also waiting for the VAR, but I didn't see it, so I just kind of proceed. I already focused on the next one," Iga Swiatek said after the win.
