Wimbledon is one of the most prestigious Tennis tournaments. It is one of the Grand Slam events, along with the Australian Open, French Open (Roland Garros), and the US Open, which happens every year. It is the best tournament on grass surfaces in a year and is probably the most hyped Grand Slam event in the sport. A majority of players wish to win Wimbledon at least once in their careers.
India has had good representation in Tennis since the Open Era. Many Hall of Famers have played the sport for India and made a name for themselves. While no Indian has been able to win the Singles Grand Slam, there have been successful players in the doubles and mixed doubles categories. In the 21st century, India has had many such players to win multiple Grand Slams.
At Wimbledon, three Indian players have been successful and managed to win the title. In 1999, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi became the first and only Indian pair to win Wimbledon. The duo went on to win the event in other instances with different partners. They inspired the likes of Sania Mirza, Rohan Bopanna, and others to play the sport for the country.
While Bopanna hasn't been able to win a grass-court Grand Slam, Mirza scripted history in 2015 when she became the first and only Indian woman to win Wimbledon. In total, India has won nine Wimbledon titles, all of them in the doubles category. All of them were won by the trio of Paes, Bhupathi, and Mirza, who made India proud.
