The Monte Carlo Masters saw two wildcard entries in the tournament that were about to make a comeback in this clay season. The first wild card was 3-time grand slam winner and former world number 3 Stan Wawrinka who played his first game against Alex de Minaur. Unfortunately, it was not much of a game for the 39-year-old veteran as he faced a crushing defeat against the young Australian upcoming player.

The other wildcard in the setup was another former top 10 Gael Monfils. The 37-year-old French man who has made it to two quarter-finals and two semi-finals in grand slams and 12 ATP titles to his name was also set to make a comeback. Monfils is known to be one of the most accurate players in tennis where he could place the shots just out of reach from the opponent. It will be interesting to see how he will use his experience and tactics in this ongoing tournament.

Monfils scrapes through to the next round

This was not really an easy win for the Frenchman in the second round of the tournament. Monfils was making a lot of errors which Aleksander Vukic took advantage of. The first set was already intense and the set ended in an even more intense tiebreaker, where Vukic got the better of Monfils first up. Lucky for Monfils he came back in the second set winning 6 games to 3 and coming back into the game. It was up to the last and final set to decide the winner of the match. This was another gruelling phase in the game, but eventually, Monfils came out on top winning 7 games to 5 and moving to the next round.

This might not be a perfect game for Monfils, but he will be happy that he managed to get over the line this season. There should be some props given to Vukic for giving him a tough fight, but that is all the tournament wrote for him. As for Monfils, he will be breathing a sigh of relief, but the next few rounds are not going to be easy for the former world number 6. We hope Monfils can keep the same composure and play better against a top-ranking player in Daniil Medvedev.
