Gael Monfils faces crushing defeat against Thiago Monteiro causing early exit in Italian Open

The first round of the Italian Open has already begun and now there has been and this time we will be getting the iconic players of the season. There are still high hopes in this tournament consisiting of some top players who have given some great performances this ATP tour. This has already been a season of surprises that has kept the fans excited and curious to how each tournament will pan out.

One of the players the people were looking forward to was former top 10 ranked player Gael Monfils. The Frenchman made a return in this clay season at the Monte Carlo Masters. He was up against a much lower seeded and qualifier winner Thiago Monteiro in the match. Though the Brazilian did cause a major upset in Madrid, the fans still thought this will be an easy victory for Gael Monfils who has  been a top player in his peak.

Monfils crashes out

Unfortunately the complete opposite happened in the match as Monfils was completely outplayed in the match. Thiago already caused a major surprise as he beat Monfils in the first set winning 6 games to 2. The second set saw Monfils try to make a comeback but he still couldn't make the important break which lead to Monteiro winning the first set and causing another major upset. This was another disappointing performance from one of the most experienced players in ATP.

This is another perfect example of a terrible ATP season for Monfils. This loss will surely diminish the confidence of the 37-year-old talent in the game. This has already been a great upset in the tournament in only the first round and Monfils would want to forget this game as soon as possible. This is another early exit for Monfils which has said a lot about his season so far where he has looked completely rusty so far.
