Tennis star Alex de Minaur has become a quarterfinalist at Roland Garros for the first time after defeating Daniil Medvedev on Monday in a match featuring two of the most formidable players on the ATP Tour.

Speaking about the game here, in a fierce match on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, 11th-seeded De Minaur stunned fifth-seeded Medvedev 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. The Australian moved to 3-6 in the two-match Lexus ATP Head2Head series by displaying a typically strong defensive style and ruthlessly knocking off any short balls thrown up by his higher-ranked opponent.

The way the match took place, with Medvedev handing De Minaur the win with a double-fault, seemed quite different from how the former World No. 1 started his attempt to advance to a major quarterfinal for the fourth time in a row. The third game of the game saw the No. 5 in the PIF ATP Rankings smash De Minaur's serve and win the first set, but the second set saw a dramatic change in the final result of the match.

However, before Medvedev sought a medical time-out at the changeover and received treatment for blisters on his right foot, De Minaur earned his first break of the match, 3-2. His level fell, even though it didn't seem to be hindering his ability to move.

Alex de Minaur will next face either fourth seed Alexander Zverev or 13th seed Holger Rune

The battle seemed to be heading to a thrilling conclusion as Medvedev quickly recovered an early break to tie at 1-1 in the fourth set, but De Minaur immediately produced another rally upon his comeback. However, he won a match where he converted seven of the 14 break points he received after claiming four of five games from 2–3.

De Minaur has moved into his second Grand Slam quarterfinal after making it to the same stage at the US Open in 2020. In Paris, he will next face either fourth seed Alexander Zverev or 13th seed Holger Rune.Β
