In an emotional victory at the US Open 2024, world number one Jannik Sinner dedicated his triumph to his aunt, who is battling severe illness. After claiming his second Grand Slam title of the season with a commanding performance against Taylor Fritz—winning 6-3, 6-4, 7-5—Sinner fought back tears as he addressed the crowd on the trophy podium.

In a heartfelt message, Sinner revealed the personal significance of his win, stating, “I don’t know how much longer I will have her in my life.” He expressed his love for the sport but emphasized the importance of family during such challenging times.

“I love tennis, I practice a lot for these stages but I realize that there is also a life away from the tennis courts and I would like to dedicate this to my aunt who is not feeling well,” he added. Sinner lamented that if he could make a wish, it would be for the good health of everyone, acknowledging the harsh reality of his aunt’s situation.

Sinner shuts critics with ace performance

This victory in New York comes on the heels of a tumultuous period for Jannik Sinner, who had been under scrutiny after failing two drug tests earlier in the year. Although he was cleared of any wrongdoing, the controversy had cast a shadow over his campaign. Despite this, Sinner remained focused and resilient, attributing his success to the unwavering support of his team and his dedication to improvement.

Reflecting on his season, Sinner noted, “This title means so much because the last period of my career was not easy. My team have supported me every day and thank you to the people who are close to me.” He acknowledged the impact of his earlier successes, including his Australian Open win, which bolstered his confidence throughout the year.

Sinner’s triumph also marked a significant moment in tennis history by ending the American hopes for a Grand Slam title, with Taylor Fritz being the first US man to reach a major final since Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open win. Despite the defeat, Fritz remained optimistic and praised Sinner’s performance, saying, “It’s really impressive. He was too good.”
