The match had a controversy over a VAR call in the second set between Carlos and Jack. This video review system is very new to the BNP Paribas Open tournament as it was previously tested during the 2024 US Open and 2025 Australian Open.

It was not a surprise as the chair umpire was Mohamed Lahyani, who gave the call in the middle of the rally. Alaraz and Draper were playing a long rally which ended with a drop shot from Alcaraz. Draper ran towards the nets and tapped the ball back to Alcaraz, and while the Spaniard was trying to hit the ball back, Lahyani interrupted by saying ‘Not up’.

This distraction forced the Spaniard to hit the ball wide outside the line, but he got the points as the chair umpire thought the ball had bounced twice. Jack Draper was furious at the umpire Lahyani. He charged at him and called in for a review, showing the ball was clean.

Lahyani asked the two tennis players to replay the point as he interfered with Alcaraz’s return shot. Draper argued that Carlos missed the shot completely, and Mohamed again rewatched the rally. He then gave the call in favour of Draper.

It was the perfect moment for Alcaraz to start an argument, but the Spaniard wisely let it go, which is great sportsmanship. This unwanted drama broke his rhythm, and he eventually lost the match in the third set. Fans are happy for Draper reaching the Masters 1000 finals. Draper is set to play the final against another top seed, Holger Rune.
