'Nothing could stop me, I did not care....' - Bianca Andreescu opens up on her US Open 2019 title win vs Serena Williams which etch her name in tennis history

2019 was the year when the world witnessed an emerging young talent defeat legendary Serena Williams in a Grand Slam Final match. Notably, tennis legend Serena Williams was undoubtedly the clear favourite, but young up-and-comer Bianca Andreescu stunned her in the final match of the US Open 2019 and went on to win the title. The Canadian-born star aspires to accomplish a comparable feat, and her thought of the path up to the miraculous victory is stunning.

However,  the 23-year-old star spoke about her tennis career thus far and her ambitions for the future on The Tennis Podcast. Andreescu talked frankly about the confidence she experienced after winning the US Open in 2019 while defeating Serena, as well as the following injuries, mental health issues, and a new attitude towards life. In response to a question concerning her extraordinary performance at the 2019 US Open, the Canada-born star admitted to being "possessed."

Meanwhile, the youngster was unable to repeat her winning form, which she had during the 2019 year when she won the US Open 2024 title. She quickly experienced a health crisis, as also advised by Andreescu. Her early years were highlighted by a persistent back ailment, a sprained ankle, a stress fracture in her foot, and a damaged adductor muscle. She missed the entire 2020 campaign due to a knee ailment. She could only play 33 games in 2022 and 30 matches in 2021.

I just want to and I know it’s going to come: Andreescu

“I don’t know, I feel like I was possessed in 2019. Like, nothing could stop me. I did not care about anything. But doing my best competing until my frickin limbs fell off.  Just kept going at it no matter what. And that’s what I want to have again, like, I just want to and I know it’s going to come," she said on The Tennis Podcast.

“I want to have that fearlessness again. I really do. Just like going after my shots, not caring as much, you know, if I missed a shot or not because I know I’m doing the right thing. We’ve had, in a way, similar careers. It’s not the same, but we won at a very young age and then had a break here and a break there. Being back on court with her, I think it’s great for tennis," she added further.
