The Italian Open finals will be played on Sunday between Nicolas Jarry and Alexander Zverev. This has been one of the surprising matchups which we never expected in this iconic ATP 1000 tournament. These two will be battling it out on Sunday to get their hand on the Italian Open trophy which they are just one more win away from achieving. It will be interesting to see who will be the one who will emerge victorious in this final encounter.
Though we all know that Zverev has been great in this tournament, the emergence of Nicolas Jarry in this tournament has been equally impressive. The 24-ranked player started his season well winning against 3 unseeded players Matteo Arnaldi, Stefano Napolitano and Alexandre Muller to make it to the quarter-finals. If you thought that his journey was done right there with Stefanos Tsitsipas coming against him the Chilean proved us wrong once again beating him in a thrilling encounter. He also went on to beat another higher-seeded player Tommy Paul in the semi-finals as well making it to his first ATP 1000 final.
The story of the first-time Italian Open finalist
While discussing the likes of somebody like Jarry we have to remember that he is not new to the professional scene at all. He has been in the ATP scene for 10 years and has had a roller coaster of a career. From 2018 Jarry rose through the rankings and became a top 40 ranked player and went on to even win a title in 2019 in Bastad. Though he did face some problems from 2020-21 due to a provisional suspension due to testing positive for Covid 19, he still came back and even won two ATP tournaments in Geneva and Santiago to come back up the rankings.
This has been a great journey for him and he has still cemented himself as the number 1 Chilean player this season. Though he has a slightly risky style of game where he has a powerful forehand and has the habit of over-rushing, it still managed to help him out in the games as he has improved the defensive side of his game. It is still really early to predict but it will still be great to see if he manages to surprise everyone and win the Italian Open.
