Former American tennis sensation John McEnroe has recently opened up on Jannik Sinner's ongoing doping scandal, stating that a ban is currently looming for the three-time major champion. Following the Italian sensation's successful defense of his 2025 Australian Open title, the legendary player spoke about the shadow cast by the world number one's previous doping tests, which revealed the presence of clostebol in his body during the 2024 Indian Wells.

Despite the International Tennis Integrity Agency initially clearing Jannik Sinner of wrongdoing, the World Anti-Doping Agency has appealed this decision many times, seeking a suspension from CAS of 1-2 years after his recent win at Melbourne Park.

The well-known tennis analyst expressed surprise that this looming threat has not visibly affected the Italian sensation's performance on the court. The 65-year-old tennis star noted that despite the pressure from the doping saga and extreme backlash for the same from the fans and former players, the 23-year-old star has somehow managed to maintain a high level of play in Melbourne, even performing exceptionally well in high-stakes matches like the Australian Open final against the world number two and Germany star Alexander Zverev.

“Off the court, the issue with the drug thing. A suspension is looming potentially. I thought that would affect him at the US Open, but it didn’t and he played fantastic there. Then they said the case was over and done with and then it crops up again. So you are thinking that’s going to get into his head, but it doesn’t. He’s able to play just as effectively, if not better. He’s an awesome player, there’s no doubt about it. The way he gets into the corners is unbelievable, he puts tonnes of pressure on opponents, that’s clear,” John McEnroe said on Eurosport.
