India suffered another heartbreak as javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra narrowly missed the Diamond Trophy by a margin of just 1 cm. Neeraj recently settled for a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem made a record-breaking throw of 92.97 meters to claim the gold medal.

However, Neeraj missed out on the Diamond Trophy to Grenada’s Anderson Peters, who made a throw of 87.87 meters. Neeraj’s third attempt was 87.86 meters, narrowly losing the Diamond Trophy by a mere centimetre.

Neeraj managed to claim $12,000 in prize money, while Peters won a whopping sum of $30,000. Apart from the prize money, Peters also secured a wildcard entry to the World Athletics Championships. Germany’s Julian Weber finished third with a best throw of 85.97 meters.

Groin injury affecting Neeraj Chopra's throws

Interestingly, after the 2024 Paris Olympics heartbreak, Neeraj’s mother revealed that he was not fully fit and had been working hard to recover from a groin injury. The injury has affected him throughout the season and it was the main reason behind his multiple failures to hit the 90-metre mark.

Neeraj's mother Saroj said that Silver was equivalent to Gold for them. She claimed that Neeraj was injured and hence it was a good performance. "For us silver is also equal to gold...he was injured, so we are happy with his performance," added Saroj.

Neeraj won the Diamond Trophy two years ago and also secured a Gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, this season has been challenging for him. Despite this, his dedication to fitness and his hunger for winning championships suggest he will make a remarkable comeback in upcoming tournaments.
