India’s campaign at the Paris 2024 Paralympics concluded on a high note, with the nation recording its best-ever performance at the prestigious global event. The Indian contingent brought home a remarkable 29 medals, including seven golds, nine silvers, and 13 bronzes, finishing 18th in the overall medal tally.
The final day of the Games saw India miss out on adding another medal to its tally when Pooja Ojha failed to qualify for the finals of the women’s kayak 200m event. Despite this, India celebrated an overall stellar performance, besting some of the most established nations in para-sports like Switzerland, South Korea, Belgium, and Argentina.
The final medal for India came from Navdeep Singh, who secured gold in the men's javelin throw F41 category. His victory, however, was not without drama. Initially awarded silver, Navdeep’s medal was upgraded to gold after Iran’s Beit Sadegh was disqualified for a conduct violation.
Track and field led India to glory
India’s success in Paris was largely driven by its athletes in track and field events, who claimed 17 of the 29 medals. Among the standout performances was that of Preethi Pal, who made history as the first Indian woman to win a medal in athletics, clinching two bronzes in the 100m and 200m (T35) sprints. Another highlight was Navdeep’s triumph, a moment of redemption after missing out on the podium at the Tokyo Paralympics.
Shooter Avani Lekhara once again etched her name in the record books by successfully defending her gold medal in the women's 10m air rifle standing SH1 event, becoming a two-time Paralympic champion. Meanwhile, para-badminton athletes contributed significantly, with Thulasimathi Murugesan becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in para-badminton, taking silver in the women’s singles SU5 event. The women's para-shuttlers claimed three additional medals, marking their debut on the Paralympic podium.
