Vinesh Phogat Scripts history

Star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat scripted history in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 after securing a spot in the final of Women’s Freestyle 50kg. With this win, she also confirmed the fourth medal for India in the current edition of the Olympics. Phogat defeated Cuba’s Guzman Lopez and achieved an amazing ‘victory by points [without any points scored by the opponent]. Vinesh earned 5 points to none scored by her opponent Lopez.

The 29-year-old Indian wrestler, alongside her coach, broke into tears after this historic and emotional victory that secured an entry into the final of the Women’s Freestyle 50kg. The emotional moment after Vinesh Phogat’s victory also went viral on social media as soon as it was shared by the official broadcasters on X (formerly Twitter).

Here’s the video:

Notably, Tuesday happened to be an amazing day at the office for Vinesh Phogat as she defeated Japan’s Yui Susaki in the first match. Later she managed to continue her winning run against Ukraine’s Oksana Livach, finishing with a sensational ‘semi-final’ win against Cuba’s Guzman Lopez.

Now, the Haryana star will face USA’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the Gold Medal match of the Women’s Freestyle 50kg competition.

Speaking of Vinesh Phogat’s struggles off the field, she was one of the front faces in the protests held by wrestlers against the ‘accused’ president of the federation. Phogat, alongside her fellow wrestlers, both men and women, including the likes of Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik showed great resilience against the authorities and the administration that aimed to silence the protesting voices.

So, the potential Olympic medal, be it a gold or a silver, in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 will be a blunt answer to the critics; the very critics who questioned her credentials when she was one of the main faces among the protesting wrestlers.
