A heartbroken Vinesh Phogat has announced her retirement from wrestling a day after her shocking disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024. The Haryana star scripted history by becoming the first Indian wrestler to reach the finals of the Olympic Games. Unfortunately, the joyous celebration didn't even last for 24 hours as her campaign had to come to an abrupt end.

From ensuring at least a silver medal to leaving without anything. That has been the story of Phogat, all because of a 100-gram extra weight. Competing in the 50 kg freestyle wrestling event, she tried her best to lose weight by even cutting her hair and drawing out blood. However, in the end, all her efforts were in vain and she had to be hospitalized due to dehydration.

"Mother wrestling won against me, I lost... Your dreams and my courage are shattered. I don't have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will forever be indebted to all of you. Please forgive (me)," she wrote on X.

We will try talking - Mahavir Phogat reacts to Vinesh's retirement decision

Like billions of Indians, Vinesh Phogat's uncle Mahavir Phogat was also deeply disappointed. However, Mahavir, who was also a trainer and mentor of the Phogat sisters, does not want the Haryana star to make such a sudden decision out of disappointment. The former Indian amateur wrestler said that he would try to convince the 29-year-old to reverse her decision.

"She was going to bring the Olympic gold this time but got disqualified. It is natural to feel hurt after such a setback and hence she arrived at this decision. Once she is back home, we will try talking to her about competing in the 2028 Olympics," Mahavir Phogat, said as per ANI.

Meanwhile, Vinesh has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) for awarding her a silver medal. However, the decision on her case is pending and it remains to be seen whether the wrestler will be honoured with what she deserves for hard work and determination.
