Jordan Pickford of Everton, however, stopped his feeble attempt to prolong City's terrible run. The club led by Pep Guardiola has dropped nine of its past 13 games in all competitions. With the draw, City has gained only five league points since the end of October.

There were some boos from home fans at Etihad Stadium when the final whistle blew, and a heartbroken Erling Haaland tore off his jersey and hair bobble before making his way directly down the tunnel. The shocked Pep Guardiola was hardly able to be heard answering questions during the post-match press conference.

"How do you react mentally?" the City boss Pep Guardiola was asked about the penalty miss.

"Life is not easy. Sport is not easy. When it happens, it is OK. There are still a lot of minutes to play and we had the chances afterwards. We created, incredible how they ran and fought. In some games, it was not good but today well played," replied the dejected Guardiola during the post-match press conference.

Manchester City may drop to eighth place

Bernardo Silva's deflected strike gave City the lead in the fourteenth minute, but Iliman Ndiaye tied the score in the 36th minute. With leaders Liverpool hosting lowly Leicester City in the late game on Boxing Day, City fell to seventh place in the standings and may drop to eighth by day's end. Manchester City are now in seventh position in the rankings, 11 points behind the leaders Liverpool,
