In a French league match, Monaco defender Wilfried Singo apologised for the risky challenge that caused several wounds and facial injuries to PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. During PSG's 4-2 victory against Monaco on Wednesday, Donnarumma's face was hit by his opponent's cleat, resulting in blood on it.

After his shot was stopped, the AS Monaco defender tried to jump over the diving goalie in the 17th minute, but Singo's studs struck the Italy international. Rather, Singo's cleats hit Gianluigi Donnarumma, causing him to sustain several wounds and obvious injuries behind his right eye.

Singo apologised on social media for the injuries, acknowledging their seriousness. "My gesture was obviously not intentional, but I was able to see afterwards that he had a significant injury to his face," he wrote in French and Italian. "I wish you a good recovery."

After requiring on-field medical attention, backup goalkeeper Matvey Safonov took Donnarumma's position. The 24-year-old was subsequently verified by PSG to have had "a facial trauma with multiple wounds" and will be subject to additional medical evaluations.

PSG leads the Ligue 1 table

Images of Donnarumma's wounds went viral, highlighting Singo's previous yellow card. Officials determined that the incident was inadvertent, enabling Singo to continue playing in spite of cries for harsher penalties. To triumph, PSG overcame a 2-1 deficit in the second half after the early loss of their best goalkeeper. With goals from Gonçalo Ramos to tie the score and two goals from Ousmane Dembele to seal the win, PSG's league-winning streak now stands at 16 games.

With the victory, PSG leads the Ligue 1 rankings by a dominating 10-point margin and has 40 points going into the Christmas break. Despite having a game in hand, Olympique de Marseille and Monaco, both with 30 points, are behind the league leaders. Although PSG's dominance is confirmed by the result, Donnarumma's health remains a concern as the squad prepares for the remainder of the season.
