If Erik ten Hag departed, David de Gea was prepared to return to Manchester United, but he is now expected to sign with another team, per sources. After being released by Manchester United last summer, the Spanish goalkeeper had a year off, but he is getting ready to play again. The goalkeeper's 12-year tenure at Old Trafford came to an end when his contract finished following the 2022–2023 season.

Legendary player David De Gea didn't get the farewell he deserved because his future was uncertain during the season. The Spaniard was angry with people who, in his opinion, should have known better. Specifically John Murtough, the club's football director at the time, and manager Erik ten Hag were the masterminds behind the departure of the goalkeeper.

According to The Athletic, De Gea even admitted to his closest friends that he would have been happy to come back to United if those two individuals were no longer there. However, Ten Hag will continue as manager for an additional year after INEOS's month-long hunt for a suitable replacement came to an end. Murtough was forced out by Sir Jim Ratcliffe's group, and Dan Ashworth, the sporting director of Newcastle United, took his position.

What is next for the goalkeeping icon, David de Gea?

Even with Murtough's departure, De Gea is not likely to come back to Old Trafford, even though he is expected to reveal his new club soon. The club recommended a goalkeeping coach, with whom he trains three or four times a week. When the Spaniard tweeted an hourglass emoticon on Saturday, he hinted at an announcement, but the social media message contained no further details.

According to The Athletic, De Gea has a number of choices available to him, namely teams in Saudi Arabia, America, and Italy. Though there's a chance he'll stay in Europe, the West Coast of the United States is his ideal location.  De Gea is ranked seventh all-time in United's history with 545 appearances for the club.
