West Ham United have announced that striker Niclas Fullkrug will be out of action for several weeks due to a hamstring injury. The 31-year-old sustained the injury during the FA Cup third-round match against Aston Villa on Friday evening. Fullkrug had been set to start in Graham Potter’s first game as head coach but had to exit the match just 15 minutes in after experiencing discomfort in his left leg.
After receiving treatment, Fullkrug was escorted off the pitch by the club's medical staff and was promptly replaced by Danny Ings. West Ham has officially confirmed that the striker has suffered a hamstring injury and will be sidelined for several weeks as a result.
Fullkrug has been on and off in his pursuit of making an impact since joining West Ham from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, with only 11 appearances across all competitions. However, he recently showed his metal by scoring his second Premier League goal during the match against Manchester City, despite the team's defeat. It's worth noting that he had previously been sidelined for 10 matches between September and November due to an Achilles issue.
The past season, he established himself by scoring 13 goals in all competitions for Dortmund, leading them to the UEFA League final. His outstanding performance earned him a spot in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad for the European Championship, where he made his presence felt by scoring twice in five appearances.
West Ham troubled with injuries
His injury poses a substantial challenge for Potter, who has launched his West Ham tenure with several crucial players missing from the attacking lineup.
Captain Jarrod Bowen will not be returning anytime soon after fracturing his foot in December, and Michail Antonio, the club’s all-time top goalscorer in the Premier League, is facing a lengthy recovery after sustaining a leg injury in a recent car crash.
West Ham, currently placed 14th in the table, is set to take on Fulham at home as they return to Premier League action.
