Matchday 6 UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Leverkusen claim vital wins

The UEFA Champions League kicked off once again this week with a highly anticipated clash between Atalanta and Real Madrid at the Gewiss Stadium.

In other key matchups, Inter Milan battled Bayer Leverkusen at the Bayarena, while Shakhtar Donetsk put their skills to the test against the German powerhouse, Bayern Munich. Paris Saint-Germain made a crucial visit to Salzburg, determined to secure vital points, and Liverpool squared off against Girona in the latter's backyard.

Liverpool remains at the Top of the Standings 

The current Premier League leaders edged past Girona as Mo Salah scored a penalty kick from the spot in the 63rd minute. The 1-0 win ensured the Reds held onto their top position in the UEFA Champions League standings.

Real Madrid makes an important comeback 

Reigning Champions Real Madrid, who started the day at 24th spot, edged past inform Italian side Atalanta in an edge-of-the-box thriller that ended 3-2 in favour of Madrid. Galactico's signing finally looked in tune as he gave Madrid an early lead in the 10th minute. However, Mbappe had to be subbed off in the 35th minute due to an Injury details of which are yet to be disclosed. 

Atalanta fought back with a Penalty conversion by De Keyelaere towards the end of half-time. However, a quick double early in the second half from Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham put Madrid in the driver's seat. Atalanta tried to force a comeback with Lookman scoring in the 65th minute. But Madrid were able to fend off rallies of attack and win it 2-3. The win propelled Madrid to the 17th spot

Bayern demolished Shakhtar Donetsk

At Veltins Arena, although Shakhtar Donetsk stunned the German giants Bayern Munich with an opener in the fifth minute, it was all about Bayern in the remainder of the match as they slammed goals one after the other, coming from Laimer, Muller, Oliese and Musiala as Bayern Munich won the fixture 5-1.

Leverkusen stole a win in the 90th minute 

In a fixture involving two top 8 teams from the round-robin phase, Inter-Milan and Bayer Leverkusen were heading towards a draw, but N Mukiele scored a stunner at the end of regular time in the 90th minute to steal a 1-0 for Leverkusen.

Paris Saint Germain joins the Top 24 

PSG forced its way into the top 24 teams to qualify for the next round for the time being as they demolished RB Salzburg with a 3-0 scoreline.

Villa prevails in a close clash

In a clash between two teams placed at the top and bottom half of the standings, top-based side Aston Villa prevailed as they beat RB Leipzig 3-2 in a close encounter. Villa solidified its place in the top 8 with 13 points.

Brest still in Top 8

Brest also managed to hold onto their top 8 spot as they edged past PSV 1-0. Brest now stands in 5th place with 13 points.
