On Thursday, November 14, the Brazil national team visited Venezuela for an important fixture on matchday 11 of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. During the fixture, Venezuela's goalkeeper Rafael Romo gave away a careless penalty in the 60th minute when he committed a foul on Vinícius Júnior. However, he showcased his skill and composure by successfully saving the subsequent penalty shot from the Brazilian attacker.
The Tale of Brazil's tame fixture
The match was electrifying right from the start. Just two minutes before halftime, Raphinha unleashed a stunning free-kick that left the 'Vinotinto' supporters shell-shocked. Before this brilliant goal, the 'cafeteria' referee made a questionable decision by sparing Vanderson a red card after he delivered a dangerous kick to José Martínez.
Venezuela's coach Fernando Batista made a strategic adjustment at halftime by substituting John Murillo for Telasco Segovia, a decision that had a positive impact on the team. Segovia immediately showcased his potential by scoring with his first touch after receiving an assist from Jefferson Savarino, delivering a strong right-footed strike that found the back of the net against Ederson.
Vinicius Junior missed the target from the penalty spot.
In the 59th minute, the Real Madrid star made a promising run down the right flank and was unfortunately brought down by Rafael Romo, who misjudged the situation in his attempt to intercept the play. Initially, referee Rojas did not recognize that the foul had taken place within the penalty area and was awarded a free kick.
However, the VAR official promptly stepped in to clarify the situation, leading the referee to award a penalty instead. Vinicius Junior took on the responsibility of the penalty, even though Raphinha had successfully converted two penalties in previous matches against Peru.

Vinicius approached the shot with a sense of confidence, but Romo was ready and made a crucial save, managing to stop the initial kick. Remarkably, Vinicius was unable to score from the rebound, sending the follow-up attempt wide of the target. Following the missed penalty, Jubilation erupted amongst the home crowd. Vinicius has played six matches and has yet to register any goals in national colours.
