Two days ago, Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto announced that he was going to leave the club after 18 years. He was a La Masia product and joined the junior team at the age of 14 and made his first team debut in November 2010. Since then, he has made 373 appearances and scored 19 goals for Barcelona. He also represented Spain and made 11 appearances. After being the first-team player for 11 years he is now available for free agent as his contract with the club ended in June.

He had a wonderful time with Barcelona and his famous goal in the 2017 UEFA Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain which Barcelona won the match because of his goal and helped the team to reach the quarter-finals is memorable. Barcelona won the match by a score of 6-5 aggregate. During his time with Barcelona, he won seven La Liga titles, two UEFA Champions League and other major trophies.

Today at Auditori Barcelona kept his farewell in which many former players were represented. During his farewell, he said, “In recent years I have seen teammates say goodbye and today it’s my turn. I’ve been a Culé since I was a child, at the age of 14 I fulfilled the dream of wearing the shirt and I lived every moment as the last because I didn’t know how long it would last.” “After two years going back and forth to Reus, I went to live at La Masia and those were the best years of my life. I made friends there and grew up learning the values of this club. La Masia is and will be the great value of this club,” as per Barca Universal.

Sergi Roberto's future uncertain

Sergi Roberto had previously received one-year contract extensions from the club since he was mostly utilized as a veteran rotational squad player capable of providing a quality shift wherever on the pitch. Sergi Roberto was chosen team captain last year in recognition of his outstanding achievements and unwavering dedication. But when Hansi Flick joined the club, the dynamics changed and his age was a factor.

During the 2023-24 season, the 32-year-old versatile player appeared in 24 games across all competitions, scoring three goals and adding three assists. Under previous manager Xavi, Roberto played a significant role in the dressing room and played in a variety of positions on the field, including center midfield and right back. After Lionel Messi left the club Sergi Roberto was the club captain during the 2023/24 La Liga season.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi also wished him luck for his next step. Lionel Messi shared an Instagram post with a message. He posted, "All the luck in your new stage!!. Wish you the best, Sergi Roberto!", according to Goal.com. He hasn’t made any statement about where we will play next though he has been offered from Saudi clubs or will join Inter Miami where his teammates are playing.
