Peru is facing Canada in their second group game of the Copa America 2024. The Les Rouges have taken the lead in the game with Jonathan David scoring the first goal for the country in the ongoing major tournament. The game was tied till the 73rd minute and a sudden counterattack from the side led to the opening of Peru's defense and David breaking the deadlock against the 10-men Peru. 

The game has been full of events as Miguel Araujo received a red card in the 59th minute for striking Canadian winger Jacob Shaffelburg in the shins while battling for the ball.  Araujo was shoved off from the game, and Peru would play with ten men for the rest of the encounter. Peru might have been down to nine men when defender Marcos López avoided a red card of his own in the opening half.

Peru escapes from being two men down

Following an out-of-bounds play in the 38th minute, López and Canadian defender Alistair Johnston appeared to be arguing before the Peruvian defender raised his head towards Johnston and made contact with his forehead. When play was stopped, Johnston immediately went to the ground. Despite the VAR review of the head-butt, the referee did not give López a yellow or red card as play restarted. 

During the game, another incident occurred right ahead of the end of the first half the second assistant referee collapsed on the field right ahead of the first half of the game. Due to excessive heat in Kansas City USA. While running in the sideline the linesman Humberto Panjoj appeared to have collapsed in direct sunlight on the field. 

The 10-men side has lost their second game and have been dropped at the bottom of the table as they will be facing defending champions Argentina in the final group game of the tournament. After a loss and a draw, their knockout round qualification will be in hand of the remaining two games of the group.
