On October 6, 2001, David Beckham stepped up when his country needed him and scored a last-gasp free kick, salvaging a 2-2 draw against Greece and securing England’s place at the 2002 World Cup. This goal redeemed his reputation and completed his journey to freedom from a self-imposed prison.

A situation resembling 'Either Make It or Break It'

The challenging qualification campaign had witnessed three different managers leading the Three Lions. However, under the guidance of the new boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, the team secured five consecutive Group Nine wins, reigniting hopes of topping the group.

The fate of the qualification came down to the last match against Greece, with an eye also on Germany's home fixture against Finland. As stoppage time approached at Old Trafford, the situation looked grim for the hosts.

Despite substitute Teddy Sheringham’s 68th-minute effort, Greece were leading 2-1, and with the Germans drawing, they were set to qualify automatically, leaving England needing to beat Ukraine in a qualifier.

However, Captain Beckham had other plans. His stunning long-range free-kick into the top corner shook the stadium and propelled Erikssen’s side through to the finals in South Korea and Japan.

Beckham would exact his long-awaited revenge against Argentina in the competition held in Korea and Japan when England defeated Argentina 1-0 in the group stages.

Beckham's Blitz Curler into the Net

The significance of this goal extended beyond World Cup qualification; it represented a moment of personal redemption for Beckham, solidifying his legendary status for his country.

In a crucial fixture with seconds to go, David Beckham stepped up to take a legendary free kick from 25 yards out. His team was trailing 2-1 and needed at least a draw to secure their spot in the World Cup. With remarkable composure, Beckham placed the ball, took a deep breath, and delivered a breathtaking shot that elegantly curled into the top corner of the net, leaving the goalkeeper stunned.
