Underneath an office block and car park in Lisbon lies a piece of Cristiano Ronaldo's history. The former Jose de Alvalade Stadium, where Ronaldo scored his first professional goal, is now covered by bricks and mortar. Despite the lack of recognition, this stadium marked the start of Ronaldo's remarkable career, which now boasts over 900 goals and continues to grow.
Today commemorates the 22nd anniversary of Ronaldo's first-ever competitive goal in a career that has been filled with remarkable achievements, although he has yet to win the FIFA World Cup.
The Tale of Ronaldo's First-Ever Professional Goal
At the age of 17, Ronaldo didn't just score one goal to open his account; he scored twice in a 3-0 victory at Sporting's old stadium. His first goal was a display of his exceptional skills, as he made a breathtaking run from the centre circle, manoeuvred past a group of defenders, executed his now iconic step-over on the edge of the penalty area, and then unleashed a powerful right-footed shot from a few yards into the net.
The goal footage captures Ronaldo celebrating in exuberance, removing his shirt and twirling it above his head while Sporting coach Laszlo Boloni chuckles at the boldness of the teenager's strike from the bench.
Ronaldo scored another goal just before the final whistle, executing a header two minutes into second-half stoppage time.
The Brazilian goalkeeper, Roberto Tigrao, holds the honour of being the first goalkeeper to concede a goal to Ronaldo. Since then, many others have also fallen victim to his scoring prowess.
The Stadium don't exist anymore
The Jose de Alvalade Stadium was demolished within two years as Sporting moved into their new stadium, built just 100 yards away, following Portugal's hosting of Euro 2004. Ronaldo's career since that first goal has been nothing short of remarkable and record-breaking. He is the leading scorer in Real Madrid's history, has more Champions League goals than anyone else, and has long been the top scorer even in international matches.
