Real Madrid led their game against Alaves and enjoyed a strong start, but minutes later, they were reduced to ten men at Mendizorroza. Referee Cesar Soto Grado sent Kylian Mbappe out for striking Antonio Blanco with a forceful challenge. Mbappe was first given a yellow card for the tackle, but Soto Grado was quick to issue the red card following a VAR review.

After making the bold choice to bench Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior from the beginning in preparation for next week's second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal matchup against Arsenal, Real Madrid struggled to overcome Alaves' formidable defense in the first few minutes of play.

However, the team believed they had the advantage when Raul Asencio headed home at the 19-minute mark, but Antonio Rudiger was called for a foul during the build-up on Jesus Owono. Despite their struggles in the second half, Real Madrid managed to sit rather comfortably.  When Manu Sanchez was sent out for a similarly outrageous challenge on Vinicius Junior at the 70-minute mark, it was 10 vs 10. Mbappe apologized to his teammates for leaving them for the following sixty minutes of play.  The Frenchman was "very upset" with his on-field behavior and offered no explanations.

The game's final result was unaffected by the 25-year-old's absence, as 10-man Los Blancos held onto Eduardo Camavinga's goal in the 34th minute to finally win all three points. Alaves remain in 17th place in the La Liga standings, as Real Madrid returns to within four points of Barcelona.

Although the French attacker is now anticipated to serve a three-match suspension, he is still able to play in the Copa del Rey final on April 26 against Barcelona. On Wednesday, Mbappe is available to participate in Madrid's Champions League quarterfinal second-leg matchup against Arsenal at home.
