La Liga saw the return of a highly anticipated derby this weekend as Atletico Madrid faced Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid in a pivotal La Liga clash at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Saturday.
Atletico Madrid entered the proceedings sitting in second place in the La Liga standings. They had proven their mettle this season. In contrast, Real Madrid, although positioned at the top of the league table, had their fair share of struggles and inconsistencies.
Real Madrid were without several key defenders, including Antonio Rudiger and Dani Carvajal. There had been speculation about a disconnect among the players. On the other hand, Atletico Madrid appeared set to deliver a strong performance when it mattered in an attempt to reclaim the top position.
The Madrid Derby ends in a 1-1 draw
In the 33rd minute, Atletico Madrid seized their chance to break the deadlock when the referee awarded a penalty after reviewing the incident on VAR. The referee assessed the challenge by Tchouameni on Lino, which, while somewhat soft due to minimal contact, gave Atletico the opportunity they needed to take the lead. Julian Alvarez stepped up and confidently converted from 12 yards with a perfectly executed panenka.
Real Madrid equalised in the second half. Rodrygo made a run down the right flank, pulling the ball back for Bellingham. While his shot was blocked, it fell perfectly for Mbappé, who swept it home in the 55th minute.

Real Madrid seemed to be on a roll and managed to create many good chances since they got back to level terms. However, Atletico's defence stood tall and prevented any more goals. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Real Madrid held onto their top ranking while Atletico Madrid still trailed behind the leaders by just one point.
