The war of words off the field between France and Argentina took yet another turn for the worse. During the Paris Olympics match between the two heated rivals the home team won by a single goal.

A fan captured a moment from the game where the French commentators could be heard saying unsavoury things about Nicholas Otamendi. It was alluded that the Argentine defender was involved in domestic abuse after a rough tackle on a French player.

The comment didn’t sit down well with a lot of fans who showed outrage towards the commentary team. Sports fans across the world condemned the bias and pure hatred shown towards Argentina during a huge spectacle such as the Olympics.

Ugly history between France and Argentina

It has been simmering and brewing ever since the racist chant made by Enzo Fernandez after the COPA America 2024 edition. The Chelsea star was in the eye of the storm which saw many former and current players call him out.

The latest incident has shown that the French broadcasters haven’t forgotten about the insults. Enzo Fernandez took a particular jibe at the ethnic players who are representing the French national side.

It is to be noted that Argentina had beaten France in the finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The match went to penalties as Lionel Messi and his team won their first-ever tournament in over two decades.

It is yet to be seen how the Argentina football association respond to these jibes. The football body will certainly be having a closer word with the host nation as well as the Olympic Association and FIFA.

Nicholas Otamendi is a 36-year-old veteran who has played over 117 games for Argentina. This was his first ever appearance at the Olympics and had wanted to win the gold medal for his national side.

During his storied career, the Argentina star has plied his trade across several clubs. His biggest stint was with the Manchester City side where he played 136 matches and scored 8 goals. Since his move from England in 2020 he has been playing with Benfica where he has scored 4 goals from his 117 matches.
