The hosts didn't have the best start as their star Cristiano Ronaldo failed to convert a spot-kick early in the first half. Denmark's goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel held his nerves to come off with a great save towards his left corner.

Ronaldo showed his goal-poaching instincts

The home side was persistent in their attacks and managed to push the game into extra time despite trailing most of the time. Portugal drew levels for the first time in the 38th minute via an unfortunate own goal by Joachim Anderson. However, Rasmus Kristensen was quick to put Denmark back in the lead (on aggregate) with his stunning header in the 56th minute.

Just when it appeared, that the game was getting out of Portugal's reach, Ronaldo stepped up and scored to bring life back into the team.

Cristiano ensured he redeemed himself on the same night, as he pounced on a rebound towards the near post to net his 928th career goal. However, his celebrations were short-lived as Christian Eriksen silenced the home fans with a goal of his own in the 82nd minute.

The manager introduced his trump-card Trincao late in the second half. Playing in his home ground, the winger scored the equaliser in regulation time and then went on to score and assist the winner in extra time.

The inaugural winners of the newly introduced event managed to bury the ghosts of the first leg and continued marching towards their target of securing the UEFA Nations League crown for the second time.
