Georgia has performed exceptionally well in the UEFA Euro 2024. They surprised everyone in the major tournament by qualifying as the third-best team in the knockouts after beating Portugal in the final group-stage game. They had 4 points similar to Turkiye but in head-to-head they lost against them which is why they were placed third. They are the lowest-ranked team in the tournament as they created history by qualifying for the next round.

After their historic win against Cristiano Ronaldo’s side Bidzina Ivanishvili, the former Prime Minister of Georgia, has pledged to give £8.4m to the nation's football team. They defeated Portugal 2-0 in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday to qualify for the last-16 stage, where they will face Spain. The former PM believed that the win was a "historic and dream victory." The 68-year-old promised an additional £8.4 million (30 million Georgian Lari) to the players and coaching staff if they beat Spain.

After the Georgian Dream party announced a rule on "foreign agents" in April, numerous players from Georgia's Euro 2024 squad spoke out against it. The law, which was adopted in parliament in June, triggered some of the greatest rallies seen in Georgia since the nation declared its independence in 1991. Critics warned the bill compromised their human liberties.

Will Georgia upset Spain?

The team has come a long way through the tournament, and the footballers and coaching staff will be proud of what they have achieved so far. They will look to do the impossible possible by qualifying in the quarter-finals of the tournament by beating Spain.

Presently they have the highest goal scorer of the tournament as well, Georges Mikautadze who has so far scored three goals in the tournament and also is the first goal scorer for the nation in the Euro 2024 when he drew back the team on level terms against Turkiye in their first game. He will look to add some more to his tally and finish as a top scorer in the major tournament.
