Phil Foden has expressed his dissatisfaction with his spot in the England team for Euro 2024, acknowledging that his "low mental state" had an impact on his early-season performance at Manchester City. Before the competition, Foden was crowned the Premier League's Player of the Season after excelling for Pep Guardiola's winning team in an attacking midfield position.

However, then-manager Gareth Southgate instructed Foden to play out on the left flank since Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid was playing a similar role. Although Foden has experience in the position, it is not his favoured spot on the field, and as a result, England's run at Euro 2024 ended without a goal or an assist as they lost to Spain in the championship game.

Despite scoring 27 goals across all competitions in the 2023–24 season, Phil Foden did not register for what turned out to be Southgate's last tournament as manager. Additionally, Foden believed that neither he nor England reached their full potential. "I feel frustrated I didn't get what I wanted to get out of it." "The position I was put in on the left was very difficult to influence the game,” he said.

Phil Foden felt exhausted after returning to Manchester City

"Coming off last season being the best player in the Premier League and playing centre-midfield, I do feel the position was quite difficult to get used to. I'm one who can play multiple positions and had to try to deal with it the best I could. I don't feel like England ever got going or performed to our potential." he said as per Manchester Evening News.

Foden was exhausted after returning to City due to the effects of a mid-season tournament, and it wasn't until December that he scored his first Premier League goal of the year. Foden has found it difficult to duplicate last season's performance in a poor campaign thus far for Manchester City. After stints out of Pep Guardiola's squad, the dynamic forward's recent six goals in six games point to a turnabout in his fortunes.
