The Saudi bid was the sole proposal presented and received enthusiastic support, as evidenced by the applause of over 200 FIFA member federations during an online meeting led by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Zurich.

Saudi Arabia's plan to host the matches in futuristic stadiums

The upcoming event will initiate a decade-long examination of Saudi labour laws and the treatment of workers, predominantly from South Asia, who are crucial for the construction and enhancement of 15 stadiums, alongside hotels and transport networks for the 104-game tournament.

One of the planned stadiums will soar 350 meters (yards) above the ground in Neom, a visionary city that is yet to be realized. Another stadium, honoring the crown prince, is set to be built atop a 200-meter cliff near Riyadh.

During the bid campaign, FIFA demonstrated an unwillingness to adequately scrutinize Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, which has faced extensive criticism at the United Nations this year. Saudi and international rights organizations, along with activists, have unmistakably warned FIFA that it has failed to learn from the significant criticisms directed at Qatar’s preparations for the 2022 World Cup.

The kingdom is set to invest in initiatives connected to the World Cup, in alignment with the crown prince’s ambitious Vision 2030 project, which seeks to modernize various aspects of Saudi society and the economy. A central focus of this vision is the enhancement of sports infrastructure, supported by the $900 billion sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, which is under him.
