Rodrigo Bentancur of Tottenham Hotspur has been fined heavily and suspended for seven games for his racist remarks about his teammate Son Heung-min. The FA has fined the Uruguayan international £100,000 and banned him from seven games for his racist remarks toward Son and Koreans. In September, the Uruguayan international was charged by the FA for remarks he made about his colleague. When asked about Son's jersey during a TV interview during preseason, Bentancur had made a joke about how people throughout the Asian country "all look the same."
The English FA released a statement stating that, "An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview. It was alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 as he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute.
The statement added, "It was further alleged that this constitutes an “aggravated breach”, which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin. Rodrigo Bentancur denied this charge, but the independent Regulatory Commission found it to be proven and imposed his sanctions following a hearing. Its written reasons for these decisions can be seen below."
What is the next update for Rodrugo Bentancur?
The midfielder publicly apologized to the Spurs skipper on social media shortly after his remarks went viral. Son later claimed that he had previously forgave his teammate and that he nearly started crying when they next reunited. Tottenham Hotspur will be severely harmed by the Uruguayan's absence because he has been a consistent starter for Ange Postecoglou during the 2024–25 season.
After the international break, Postecoglou's team will play their first Premier League match on Saturday at Etihad Stadium against defending champions Manchester City.
