Real Madrid's juggernaut Dani Carvajal will undergo surgery after sustaining a severe ACL injury during Saturday's 2-0 win over Villarreal in La Liga. Carvajal, 32, was stretchered off in stoppage time after a duel with Villarreal midfielder Jeremy Pino caused him to sprain his right knee unnaturally. This injury will keep him out of action for months. Carvajal confirmed his situation on social media and informed that he was set to have surgery.
Update from Carvajal
Carvajal has shared an update on his condition through social media, revealing that he will be sidelined for the next few months. As a key player for Real Madrid, he is also in contention for this year's Ballon d'Or.
He is committed to starting the recovery journey and returning to the field stronger. "Serious cruciate ligament injury confirmed, I'll have to undergo surgery and be off the field for a few months," Carvajal said on Instagram as he posted his picture in an ambulance.
"Looking forward to starting the recovery process and coming back like an animal. Thank you all for your messages, I feel very loved," he added.
Real Madrid get back to winning ways
Real Madrid bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Villarreal, after two games without a win. They suffered a 1-0 loss against Lille in the Champions League and were held to a 1-1 draw at Atletico Madrid in their previous league game.
However, the team faced a setback in stoppage time when Carvajal sustained an injury. The right-back had to be carried away on a stretcher after experiencing significant pain. The injury occurred during a duel with Villarreal midfielder Jeremy Pino, resulting in an unnatural movement of Carvajal's right knee.
"I've been talking to him and he's sad, but there's not much we can do. We are going to see the medical evaluation and think about him recovering. The doctor has told us that he has to do tests, but that it's a knee injury." - Ancelotti said.
