The English Premier League (EPL) is currently taking a break as the UEFA Champions League and Europa League are underway for the clubs. The game will resume on the 13th of April once again with Manchester City taking on Luton Town and Tottenham Hotspur and will travel away from home to face Newcastle. Ahead of the next season, the PL announced that they will be using semi-automated offside technology. The system was previously used in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

All the English clubs have unanimously agreed to the introduction of the technology. The system will be introduced during the time of September or October. The tech has not been used in most domestic club football previously, as there will be a chip fitted inside the ball that will detect the timing of the ball played and position of the player while the ball was played.

Currently, the VAR officials double-check offside decisions connected to possible goals, but there have been concerns and controversies over the time it takes to check, the lack of clarity over what is happening especially for supporters inside the stadiums has created a mess over the VAR decisions. During this time, the Hawk-eye system uses a gridline or crosshair technique using calibrated cameras around the pitch to check whether a footballer is on offside or not.

SAOT cameras to be used in PL

In the upcoming season, this will transition to the SAOT camera and technology now used in the UEFA Champions League. The usage of SAOT cameras will reduce the time by around 30 seconds per decision. The system will be in the process which the linesman will be informed during the gameplay without any halt in between the attacks that whether it was offside or not so that they can turn over the decision after the attack. SAOT is already in use in Serie A, while LaLiga will introduce it from 24/25.

The step will be a huge one for the development of football and technology. For the upcoming Euro 2024, UEFA are planning to switch to the chip-in-ball version used in Qatar.
