Mats Hummels has been brilliant for Borussia Dortmund in the 2023/24 season. The German veteran was the key to the club making it to the final of the UEFA Champions League. He was awarded back-to-back man of the match in the semi-final of the tournament against Paris Saint-Germain as he was rock solid at the back and even scored the winning goal in the 2nd leg of the tournament.

Despite his superb performance in the UCL and the domestic league as well he was snubbed from the Germany national team that will be taking part in the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024. The centre-back was shocked and believed that age-related issues like fitness might have been the reason for the snub from the team. His numbers are ridiculous, indicative of one of the finest individual campaigns the Champions League has ever seen. He has won more tackles (27) and duels (79), and made more interceptions (21) and clearances (62) than any other player in the competition, while he also ranks second for possession won (77).

As the club season has come to a conclusion he has been in break and right before the Euro 2024, he has dropped shocking comments about the possibility of leaving the club. As per Sky Germany, Hummels will only consider renewing his contract with Dortmund if the club fires head coach Edin Terzic.

Where will Hummels play next season?

There has been a rift in the relationship between the manager and the 35-year-old footballer, as the latter has always questioned his tactics in the past. Previously he also criticised before the Champions League final. As things stand the management is happy with the head coach and he is likely to continue for the next season as well as it will be the final year of his contract with the club.

Hummels might then be searching for options however, he will not make a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) or Saudi Arabia and wants to stay in Europe for some more seasons.  a move to Italy is the most likely option with AC Milan the only club mentioned as interested.
