What could be the reason behind Mats Hummels snub from national team?

Borussia Dortmund are in the final of the UEFA Champions League and will be facing Real Madrid on Saturday at the Wembley Stadium. The German side, despite having a decent season in the Bundesliga as they finished 5th in the league table, shocked everyone by qualifying for the UCL final. Against all the odds, they defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final 2-0 and kept a clean sheet in both games.

The two games showed an excellent display of defensive performance from the side, with Mats Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck showing amazing composure with and without the ball not to let a star-studded PSG lineup score against them. The former was the Player of the Match in both legs as the 35-year-old central defender showed an excellent display of tackling, blocking and intercepting the balls and marking Kylian Mbappe as he did not let the French superstar score a single goal. 

Hummels will be once again up on Saturday for his side, and make a redemption by winning the UCL in the same stadium they lost almost over a decade ago against Bayern Munich. The veteran defender's target was also to make it to the German national football team for the UEFA Euro 2024, but he was unfortunately he was not named. 

Is Hummels being overlooked intentionally?

There was turmoil after he was left out of the squad as every fan and pundit was shocked. His numbers are ridiculous, indicative of one of the finest individual campaigns the Champions League has ever seen. He has won more tackles (27) and duels (79), and made more interceptions (21) and clearances (62) than any other player in the competition, while he also ranks second for possession won (77).

After he was snubbed from the Euro 2024, he said, "If I understood him correctly, it was more about age-related issues like fitness. If I’d had a period like the one I had recently before [the friendly fixtures in] March, maybe I would have been called up - [and] for the European Championship squad as well."
