During his final Bundesliga match for Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, Marco Reus purchased beer for virtually the whole stadium's fans. Dortmund did not show the final invoice which every fan wanted to see. Reus said, “It was planned in advance. It was perfect, I’m unbelievably grateful for all the love people have shown me.”
Before presenting everyone with an alcoholic drink, he treated the crowd on the pitch with a goal and an assist in the 4-0 victory over Darmstadt. More than 81,000 fans attended the event, albeit not all were of drinking age, and many will have taken advantage of the captain's invitation, perhaps more than once.
Prior to the game, Marco Reus left a note which was signed by him and it was posted by the club on social media. The note said, “Thank you for everything! The farewell beer on me,” followed by a smiley face and “your Marco.”
Reus has decided to depart Dortmund following 12 years with the club. He scored with a fantastic free kick during the 38th minute, after assisting Ian Maatsen in the lead up for the opening goal.
The sporting director of Borussia Dortmund Sebastian Kohl said, “You could hardly think it any nicer,” Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl said. “It would be a perfect farewell if we didn’t want to crown him again in two weeks. So it was his last act here, but there’s another to come. We’re taking a good feeling with us to Wembley.”
What’s next for Borussia Dortmund legend Marco Reus in his career?
Dortmund will face Real Madrid in the upcoming UEFA Champions League final at Wembley Stadium located in London on June 1. Reus stated that he wants to carry on his career, but did not specify where.
Reus lifted the German Cup alongside Dortmund in 2017 and 2021, after returning to his hometown team from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012. He was the player of the season in both 2012 and 2019. He netted 170 goals across 428 matches for Dortmund. He tallied 15 goals in 48 matches for Germany, but injuries prevented him from competing in significant competitions.
