Ten Hag, who earlier coached De Jong at Ajax, where they won the Eredivisie and advanced to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, has shown a strong desire to reunite with the midfielder again. According to Mundo Deportivo, despite United's previous fruitless attempts to sign De Jong, the Dutch manager is desperate to complete the trade.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Ten Hag's fate with United, the manager remains committed to his plans for the current season in order to respect his contract, which runs until 2025. Given their successful collaboration at Ajax and his confidence in the midfielder's ability, he sees De Jong as a perfect complement to his squad.
However, Barcelona's position on De Jong's prospective exit remains unknown. While the club has proposed the midfielder a fresh contract with amended terms, De Jong has failed to answer, reigniting doubts about his future. The midfielder is reported to be dragging this saga out until the beginning of the summer of 2025, when he will still have one year remaining on his current contract.
Nevertheless, the Catalan club is not willing to wait and wants a resolution during the forthcoming transfer window. If he rejects the proposal, FC Barcelona may be willing to accept proposals for the midfielder, particularly if the price matches the club's financial goals from the sale.
With Ten Hag's drive propelling the transfer story along, De Jong wearing the red shirt at Old Trafford becomes an intriguing prospect. Yet, the Red Devils have to be willing to pay a high price for the midfielder, with Barcelona reportedly demanding €100 million (£85 million) from any interested parties.
It needs to be seen whether United are willing to make any moves for De Jong during the summer. In the past the transfer controversy went on for a complete transfer window and Manchester United did not have any success at all.
