Jorginho was one of the six players picked by Luciano Spalletti who might start for Italy from the penalty spot against Spain. During the pre-match press meeting on Wednesday, Spalletti spoke to the media about Italy's preparations for their encounter against Spain during their second Group B match of UEFA Euro 2024.

When asked who would take a penalty kick for the Azzurri if they were awarded one, Spalletti listed six football players. The manager said that,“I think we’ve got several options. Gianluca Scamacca, Mateo Retegui, Nicolò Barella and Federico Dimarco. Riccardo Calafiori knows how to take penalties, too, and the same is true of Jorginho. You don’t have just one, but ultimately, just one can take it. One of these guys is the penalty taker.”

Prior to missing one during the penalty shootout in the Euro 2020 Final versus England, La Nazionale prevailed despite Jorginho's flawless record from the penalty spot for the Azzurri. Jorginho missed two penalties in two separate games versus Switzerland during Italy's World Cup qualifying campaign. He then missed an additional three penalties for the Italian team.

Three years ago, during the European Championships, Italy defeated Spain on penalties. La Roja and La Nazionale, respectively, triumphed in their opening matches at EURO 2024 over Croatia and Albania.

“We can’t think they’re better” : Luciano Spalletti

On Thursday night, two of the biggest names in European football will square off in an attempt to qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2024: Spain and Italy. One extra point should be plenty for the defending champions and their Nations League rivals to advance after both teams won their initial Group B match.

There will be a lot of pride at stake when the two teams play in Gelsenkirchen. A point apiece could be enough to advance both teams to the round of 16, which might allow De la Fuente to rest important players against Albania. The former AS Roma manager said that, “We have respect for Spain, but we can’t think they’re better than they actually are. You’re not the only ones that play good football, don’t overrate yourselves.”
