Lionel Messi's record assist sealed the deal for Argentina

Lionel Messi greatly contributed to the match by providing an outstanding assist for Martínez’s winning goal. Just ten minutes into the second half, Messi demonstrated his exceptional playmaking skills by weaving through Peru's defense and delivering a precise curling cross into the penalty area.

Martínez showed his striker instincts by connecting with a superb half-volley, sending the ball into the top-right corner for his 32nd international goal. The achievement placed him in a tie with Diego Maradona, securing fifth place on Argentina’s all-time scoring list.

Messi has now unlocked a new milestone with his 58th assist in international football, equaling the record held by the United States’ Landon Donovan for the most assists in men’s international football history. At 37 years old, Messi is now focused on breaking this record as Argentina prepares to take on Uruguay and Brazil in the upcoming 2025 World Cup qualifiers.

Argentina edged past Peru

After taking the lead, Enzo Fernandes and Rodrigo De Paul played crucial roles in shielding the defense, effectively neutralizing any threats from Peru. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was rarely threatened during the match.

This win allowed Argentina to conclude 2024 positively, further establishing their position among the world's elite teams. It also displayed the team's ability to bounce back almost immediately.

Peru currently finds itself reeling at the rock bottom of the 10-team table, having accumulated only seven points from 12 games.
