The European Super League suffered a new setback on Saturday when Italian superpower Juventus chose to rejoin the group of teams opposing the contentious breakaway league. Juventus are alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona in calling for a new competition to replace the UEFA Champions League. However, the team will be rejoining the European Club Association, a group of 600 teams that has fiercely opposed plans to establish a Super League.

Madrid and Barcelona have become the only two teams attempting to establish a planned Super League, which had previously collapsed amid strong fan protests in 2021. Despite the fact that the majority of Europe's premier clubs have rejected the proposal, Madrid president Florentino Perez is determined to proceed with plans to form a breakaway club.

His position appeared to be bolstered in December, when the Court of Justice of the European Union declared that soccer's governing bodies, UEFA and FIFA, violated EU competition law by preventing plans to form a breakaway league.

How did the European Super League idea come into effect?

Super League organisers swiftly announced plans for a fresh competition, which Perez hailed as a fantastic opportunity to strengthen European club football. However, he lacked the support from several of the top teams, which faced an intense response from fans when seeking to organise an independent league in 2021.

Back then, 12 of Europe's most illustrious clubs revealed plans to establish an entirely fresh Super League. Ideas for the 20-team premier tournament would have saved 15 best teams from relegation. The original breakaway group included Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Juventus, AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Inter Milan.

Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus were the only three clubs still in the competition until Italy's record 36-time winner, Juventus, withdrew earlier in the week. There is no clarity on the future of the European Super League but it seems like the fans are happy with the current format and structure of the UEFA competitions.
